Abstract
Tana Toraja is truly affluent with cultural heritage together with its philosophical meanings. The architecture of Toraja house, locally known as Tongkonan, has very distinctive ornaments with such meaningful symbols that always embellish their homes. In order to preserve our national culture, it is imperative that we collect data on procedures, behaviors, ornaments, colors and other elements. By making such effort we will be able to have a complete repertoire of our national culture. It is a fact that there are still many unidentified arts, traditional culture, and prehistoric heritage along with so many tourism objects which are yet being developed to their fullest extent. Preservation activities are among other digging the traditional art techniques such as the making of batik with the influence of modern elements. This has everything to do with the role of the artists or designers, craftsmen and local governments who make policies on local economy. We can clearly see that there is a very close relation between the components of culture, arts and creative industry. Creative industry, also known as cultural industry, is a source of knowledge and necessitates plenty human artistic skills. It also creates work opportunities and at the same time improves people’s welfare and, ultimately, increases creativity. Cultural industry, therefore, has a very important role in developing and preserving culture in Indonesia. Creative industry has roots in creative ideas, talents and skills; these ideas are resources that are always renewable. Creative industry includes among others handicraft, designs and researches along with its development. This work discusses creative process on motif development in creating textile pieces originating from Toraja culture. This development of Toraja adornments is applied in the making of textile products using batik technique. There are three (3) works that use hand-drawn batik technique with canting ‘small copper vessel’; twenty (20) works use hand-blocked batik technique of which the stamp is made of wood; and seven (7) works use the technique of hand-blocked combined with woven technique. Totally there are thirty (30) textile pieces that have been created. In this creation, the work is on the position of textile as contemporary art piece that still has strong traditional elements of Toraja adornments and at the same time possessing commercial value. This means making textile crafts in line with the demands of urban culture among urban people with such esthetic value that originate from the ornaments of wooden carving in Toraja traditional houses; and other than that hopefully it has also good selling value.
