Abstract

Education in the primary schools or Sekolah Dasar in current Indonesia is part of a holistic educational system for the purpose of guiding a child’s character to grow and develop in a balanced way physically and spiritually. Guiding a child’s character means the development of knowledge, personality, morality, religiosity, and life skills for a young generation with all its potentials. Based on the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum for Schools from primary, secondary until high school, students are guided to gain three competencies, which are the abilities in: attitudes towards learning, knowledge acquirement, and activities. Attitude is formed through accepting, performing, appreciate, understand, live and practicing that understanding. Knowledge is gained through the activities to know, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. Skills are gained through the activities of observing, questioning, experimenting, thinking, presenting, and creating. 1 The 2014 vision of the Ministry of Culture and Education is hoped to increase the quality of education, and as an effort for students’ capacity building and self-actualizing the aspect of intellectual, spiritual, social and kinesthetic intelligence, and so, has organized the FLS2N or the National Students Arts Competition and Festival. One of the activities organized as part of the FLS2N is the National Dance Competition as an evaluation of Dance as an extracurricular activity in elementary schools. This event is not just a competition but also a celebration of the diverse cultures of dance in Indonesia, expressions of identities – empowerment of children and a meeting point of young audiences and their teachers with other children and their teachers from different provinces. At this meeting point, they are able to view each others’ performances and appreciate the differences of the cultures presented by the children representing each of the 33 provinces of Indonesia by taking part in the competition, acknowledging the differences, communicating with each other, and taking part in a the competitive atmosphere while still maintaining respect for each other as fellow competitors.
