Abstract

Representation of a nation in a cultural event such as World Expo become very important since it will shows the occurrences of the country. From that point of view, every country usually built a pavilion that will generates an image that will represents their Nation Brand. The reason that motivates me to choose this topic of research - “Indonesian Representation through Indonesian Pavilion at World Expo” – was the similarity of the concepts that used in representing ‘Indonesia’. Either the Dutch colonial government or the Indonesian government used a same formula. The aim of this research is to show the Indonesian representation through World Expo pavilion from the colonial period to independence period which is can be segmented into Guided Democratic era, New Order era and Reformation era. This research will answer the problem statements which is: (1) How the colonial government and the national government constructs the ‘Indonesian’ values in each period; (2) What is the pattern of Indonesian cultural reconstruction that was built through visual elements; (3) How the 5 (five) exhibitions from the colonial period (the year 1889 and 1910) until the independence period (the year 1964, 1988, and 2005) show similarities and differences in display techniques and how it was related with ideologies. From this research I found that the pavilion design which represents Indonesia shows different models: Indonesian Nationalism from the Guided Democratic era, Developmentism from the New Order era, and Global International from the Reformation era. Beside it, I also found that the way Indonesian government represents ‘Indonesia’ – pick and paste pieces of ethnic elements – bring an outcome which is almost as the same as the colonial when they construct images of Indonesia as the property of Dutch. The aim is different but the result is almost the same. In the past, Dutch Indies government showed the beauty, exotics, cultural richness and the grandeur of Indonesia to hide their negative image after the exploitation of the colony. In the next period – except for the Guided Democratic era - the government more focused on the tourism aspect, not the national identity. I hope, the result of this research, in form of report, and documentation that filed in CD could be used by government, private, or academic people who interested in the representation models created in the Indonesia exhibitions in World Expo from the Colonial era to the Independence era
