Abstract

Dance Education in Indonesia is practiced in primary schools as an activity for character building. It is also a part of a system or nurturing and guiding a child's character to grow and develop both physically and mentally. Through dance education, it is hoped that characteristics such as enthusiasm, moral, religious values and life skills are developed in order for the younger generation to fulfil their potential. The FLS2N (Festival Seni Siswa Nasional) or the national Students Arts Competition and Festival was organised with the goal of creating creativity and opportunities for students to perform and exhibit their creative and innovative works, optimising self development and increasing the quality of education in Indonesia. As a country made up of diverse cultures, the FLS2N is specific in its efforts motivate students to express their personal and local identities through artistic expressions, in accordance to the moral, ethical and characteristics of their local traditional roots. The many benefits of character building through the arts-especially dance- include providing avenues for students to channel their creativity, increasing their awareness of local identity, confidently innovating through dance with enjoyment, self fulfilment, motivating individuals and teams, building tolerance and capacity for creating dance based on traditional etnic dances, fostering an appreciation towards oral traditions, and developing diversity in culture, skills, and sportsmanship based on the students capacities. It is hoped that through the building of creative capacity and social intelligence through dance education, future generations of Indonesia will be empowered as global citizens with a stronger national identity, contributing, promoting, and strengthening global peace
