Abstract
Image construction by a nation is of great importance in significant cultural events such as World Exposition as it can portray, to a certain extent, the nation clearly. In this matter it’s the power that will play a dominating role and will always make an attempt to construct the culture according to their discourse and desire using a range of means, both peacefully and repressively. In Indonesia, the power always tries to construct culture to become a certain identity, and exhibition is one of the media forms that show the way power operates in reproducing identity. This research is to delve into how multicultural Indonesia is always constructed as an image in exhibition pavilion built by Indonesia at world exposition since its first participation in 1964 until 2010. This research is supported by data from diverse documents such as photographs, news in the papers, magazines, sites and articles in several books. The emphasis of this research is on the analysis of the representation of the Indonesian society and culture from the perspective of visual aspect showed in each pavilion model. This study aims to map the pattern of the image construction of the multicultural Indonesia, taking place since 1964 until 2010. This research unfolds the similarities of Indonesia’s image construction pattern with custom and cultural diversity and natural wealth as a multicultural nation through selection of cultural model which is considered the best to represent the multicultural Indonesia, despite the fact that every event has different concept and theme and different periods of power with different governmental system and leadership.
